Here is a little more information concerning Grandpa (John J. Gropp):
When the VFD was formed and Grandpa was Fire Chief, one of their greatest problems was the fact that when, for example, you would ask Donald Williams where he lived he would tell you that he lived on old Williams Road, named after his great, great uncle but if you were to ask his neighbor William Harvey where he lived he might say he lived on Harvey Road, named after his great, great, grandfather. The generally accepted name of the road might be Concannon Road.
Of course it didn't take the department long to realize that this was going to be a real problem. So to address the problem daddy (John L. Gropp) drew a map of the rural area that the VFD would cover. The map included the most commonly known road names with all the homes. I can remember going out with Daddy and Grandpa to talk to all the people to find out what road they lived on. They then compiled a list of people and roads so that if someone called in a fire they could look up their name and find out exactly where they lived. I have no idea how long this system was used. This is as accurate as a 9-10 year old can remember after 52 years.
